The School of Liberal Arts, formerly the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL), was founded in 2002, and began to enroll undergraduates in 2003. It is one of the earliest schools to set up this major in Jiangsu Province. In 2008, the Department of TCSL was renamed as International Cultural Exchange School. In 2013, the major of Chinese Language and Literature was added to it; In 2014, The School of International Cultural Exchange and the Foreign Language School were integrated to establish the School of Liberal Arts.

The School of Liberal Arts consists of two departments, namely, the Department of Chinese language and literature, the Department of international education of Chinese language, with about 240 undergraduates enrolled. The school has general offices, education offices, a mandarin test station and several laboratories constructed by central and local government altogether, including: microteaching laboratories, English listening rooms, simultaneous interpretation laboratory, which can meet students’ needs in experiments and training. It also cooperates with a number of enterprises to jointly build the professional training and practice bases. Chinese Language and Literature is the first-class discipline of university’s key construction.

The School of Liberal Arts has a strong well-constructed contingent of quality teachers with altogether 23 full-time teachers including 4 professors, 13 associate professors, 17 PhD or PhD candidates. Among them one are academic leaders of Blue Project in Jiangsu Province, two are chosen as one of the outstanding teachers to be cultivated by Blue Project. Besides, the School of Liberal Arts boasts 1 university-level academic teams; 1 university-level teaching team and more than 10 teachers have obtained the advanced certificate of “Chinese as a Foreign Language Teaching Ability” issued by the Office of International Promotion of Chinese language.

In the past 5 years, the school has hosted 3 National Social Science projects, 12 Humanities and Social Science Projects funded by the Ministry of Education, and Philosophy and Social Science Planning Projects in Jiangsu Province in total, 17 researches on Humanities and Social Science funded by Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education or other departments. 150 academic papers have been published in the following journals: Dialect LanguageStudy, Chinese Language Studies, Language Science, Language Teaching and Research, Ancient Chinese Study, Literary Legacy, Study on Ming and Qing Dynasty novel,Study on the Dream of the Red Chamber, Foreign Literature Review, Foreign Language and Foreign Language Teaching, among which 4 have been published on the key reward journals , 33 have been published on the CSSCI journals, and a lot of these papers have been completely reprinted by Xinhua Digest and Material in the Copy Press from Renmin University. Besides, teachers of this school have published 21 academic monographs, and 12 scientific research achievements have won the award for outstanding achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences among schools in the Jiangsu Province. In 2015, according to the ranking list posed by Evaluation of Chinese University published by China Academy of Management Science, Literature majors of Nanjing Audit University rose from the level D+ to C.

The School of Liberal Arts aims at cultivating high-quality and compound students with solid foundations, broad visions and innovative abilities. Students in this school enjoy broad and high-level prospects for employment. Over the past five years, the employment rate of graduates has remained over 98.5%. Hundreds of students were admitted into national institutions of high learning such as Peking University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, Wuhan University, Shanghai International Studies University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Communication University of China, etc., and numerous students went to famous foreign universities like those in USA, European countries and Australia for further study while others who were appointed by the National Office of Chinese promotion engaged in Chinese teaching and the promotion of Chinese cultural activities in different corners of the world.
